Language barriers can lead to significant inequalities in healthcare access. This can be because they received worse-quality inpatient care and outpatient preventive services, had limitations accessing care, or forgo getting the much-needed care. Although having a phone interpreting service is helpful and economically viable for healthcare practices, it does not compare to having staff on hand who are Spanish speakers and understand the cultural needs of our Spanish-speaking patients.

Digestive Health Specialists has been taking steps to improve the communities’ communication with our medical personnel. Let’s introduce you to some of our Spanish-speaking staff members and physicians.

Mi nombre es Martha Gomez y nací en Costa Rica donde nuestro idioma es el español. Para mí, es muy importante poder hablar el español y así poder comunicarles a los pacientes de habla hispana cualquier tipo de instrucciones, en su idioma nativo para una mejor comprensión.

My name is Martha Gomez, and I was born in Costa Rica where we speak Spanish. For me, it is very important to be able to speak Spanish and thus be able to communicate any type of instructions to Spanish-speaking patients, in their native language for a better understanding.

Yoselin Alcoser
Patient Access Specialist (Front Desk)

Me llamo Yoselin Alcoser y soy especialista en acceso de pacientes. Crecí en una casa donde el español es el lenguaje primordial; gracias a mis padres, pude leer, escribir y hablar español con fluidez. A medida que crecía, pude aprender inglés, aunque nunca entendí la belleza de ser bilingüe. A medida que iba creciendo pude apreciar esta habilidad cuando la usé para ayudar a otros. Trabajar en el DHS me ha hecho ver la importancia de proporcionar una atención de calidad a todas las nacionalidades. Ayudar a mi comunidad al acomodar y satisfacer sus problemas de salud ha sido muy satisfactorio. Al ser la primera persona de contacto cuando vienen a la clínica, es muy importante que el paciente se sienta cómodo verificando la información esencial necesaria para nuestros proveedores. Aunque mi trabajo es una fracción de lo que proporciona DHS, estoy orgullosa de ser un gran recurso de contacto para nuestros pacientes latinos.

My name is Yoselin Alcoser, and I am a Patient Access Specialist. I grew up in a Spanish-speaking home; thanks to my parents I was able to read, write and speak Spanish fluently. As I grew older, I was able to learn English, although I never understood the beauty of being bilingual. I grew up to appreciate the skill when I was able to use it resourcefully. Working at DHS has made me see the importance of providing quality care to all nationalities. Helping my community to accommodate and meet their health concerns has been so fulfilling. Being the first person of contact, it’s so important to make the patient feel comfortable verifying essential information needed for our providers. Although my job is a fraction of what DHS provides, I am proud to be a great contact resource for our Spanish-speaking patients.

Mi nombre es Elizabeth Rodríguez Wren y soy asistente médica certificada. Soy bilingüe y crecí hablando tanto español como inglés. El español fue el primer idioma que hablábamos en casa. Tengo un corazón para ayudar a las personas, especialmente a la comunidad hispana. Ser bilingüe me da la oportunidad de llegar a personas de todo tipo de culturas y orígenes hispanos, trabajando en estrecha colaboración con los proveedores de Digestive Health Specialists, podemos brindar una excelente atención médica a nuestros pacientes hispanos.

My name is Elizabeth Rodriguez Wren, and I am a Certified Medical Assistant. I am bilingual and grew up speaking Spanish and English. Spanish was the first language we spoke at home. I have a heart for helping people, especially in the Hispanic community. Being bilingual gives me the opportunity to reach people of all Hispanic cultures and origins. Working in close collaboration with the providers at Digestive Health Specialists, we can provide excellent medical care to our patients.

Mi nombre es Yarelis Escobar y soy la coordinadora de publicidad para Digestive Health Specialists. Soy completamente bilingüe, pero como nací en Puerto Rico, mi primer idioma fue el español. Crecí hablando español con los adultos en mi familia, mis padres, mis tíos y tías, y especialmente con mis abuelos. Hablaba inglés más con mis primos y amigos. Ser bilingüe me da la oportunidad de conocer y hacer amistad con personas de otros países, personas de México, El Salvador, Argentina, Perú, Cuba y muchos más, porque, aunque nuestras culturas sean diferentes, todos tenemos algo en común, hablamos español. Esto también me ayuda en DHS porque tengo la oportunidad de ayudar a la comunidad hispana a recibir el cuidado y la información médica que necesitan en un idioma en el que confían.

My name is Yarelis Escobar, and I am the Marketing Coordinator for Digestive Health Specialists. I am fully bilingual, but since I was born in Puerto Rico, my first language was Spanish. I grew up speaking Spanish with the adults in my family, my parents, aunts and uncles, and especially my grandparents. English was reserved for cousins and friends. Being bilingual offers me the opportunity to connect with people from other countries, like Mexico, El Salvador, Argentina, Peru, Cuba, and many more because although our cultures are different, we have one thing in common, we all speak Spanish. This also helps at DHS because it offers me the opportunity to help the Hispanic community get the medical information and care they need in the language they trust.
