In the healthcare industry, acts of compassion and exceptional care often go unnoticed. However, there are programs and initiatives that aim to recognize and honor healthcare professionals who have made a significant impact on patients’ lives. One such program is the Guardian Angel Pinning Program, which allows patients and caregivers to express their gratitude by making a donation to the Novant Health Foundation in honor of a team or team member. And we are honored to say that on Monday, July 10th, 2023, Dr. David Ramsay received a Guardian Angel Award pin in the presence of his family, Tammy Joina and her family, some of our staff members, and representatives of the Novant Health Foundation.

The Importance of the Guardian Angel Program

The Guardian Angel Pinning Program has been in existence for quite some time, but it recently gained dedicated focus and attention. Melissa Thompson, Stewardship Care Liaison for the Novant Health Foundation, took on the role of managing the program, ensuring that the remarkable efforts of healthcare professionals are duly recognized and appreciated. By allowing patients and caregivers to make a donation in honor of a team member, the program not only expresses gratitude but also helps fund important initiatives and address critical gaps within the healthcare system.

Addressing Behavioral Health as a Priority

As stated by Liz Welborn, Philanthropy Manager for the Novant Health Foundation, one of the top priorities for the foundation is addressing behavioral health, which has become an increasingly pressing issue, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the growing awareness surrounding mental health, there remains a stigma associated with seeking help. By donating to the Novant Health Foundation Remarkable Care for Behavioral Health Fund, individuals like Tammy Joina demonstrate their support and dedication to improving mental health services in their community. This act of generosity transcends the ceremony itself and has a direct impact on someone in need.

The Power of Compassionate Care

Tammy, during the pinning ceremony, expressed her deep appreciation for Dr. Ramsay, a compassionate doctor who provided her with exceptional care. She shared how her previous experiences with healthcare professionals had left her feeling unheard and mistrustful. However, Dr. Ramsay stood out by truly listening to her concerns, showing genuine care and compassion. His consistent follow-up and attention to her well-being helped rebuild her trust in healthcare providers.

Tammy’s son, Kebba, also expressed his gratitude in a touching letter, highlighting the relief and kindness Dr. Ramsay brought to his mother’s life. This heartwarming story serves as a reminder that compassionate care can have a profound impact not only on patients but also on their families. It reinforces the importance of actively listening to one another and treating everyone with empathy, regardless of their background or circumstances.

The Guardian Angel Pinning Program provides a platform for patients and caregivers to express their gratitude towards healthcare professionals who have made a significant difference in their lives. It serves as a reminder that acts of compassion and exceptional care should be acknowledged and celebrated. By participating in such programs and donating to relevant funds, individuals can contribute to addressing critical issues within the healthcare system, such as behavioral health.

The story of Dr. Ramsay and Tammy demonstrates the power of compassionate care and the profound impact it can have on individuals and their families. It serves as an inspiration for healthcare professionals to strive for excellence and empathy in their interactions with patients. Let us remember to express our gratitude and support those who go above and beyond to provide exceptional care, for they truly are guardian angels in our lives.
