About Nicholas Koutlas, MD
Dr. Nicholas Koutlas was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, but grew up primarily in Greenville, North Carolina. He attended Wake Forest University for undergraduate studies where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a Biochemistry concentration. He then returned home in 2014 and attended medical school at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. It was during his time in medical school where he discovered his passion for Gastroenterology. He was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society during his third year and later served as the chapter president. He graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 2018.
Following medical school, Dr. Nicholas Koutlas completed residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University Hospital in 2021. He then pursued a Gastroenterology fellowship at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, which he completed in 2024 after serving as chief fellow. His work in fellowship primarily focused on novel therapeutic applications of endoscopic ultrasound. His interest in complex endoscopic procedures led him to complete an additional year of training in Advanced Endoscopy at the University of Virginia in 2025.
Dr. Nicholas Koutlas enjoys providing care for a wide variety of gastrointestinal disorders. He has a particular interest in the endoscopic management of benign and malignant disorders of the pancreas and biliary tree. He also has an interest in the endoscopic resection of large polyps in the gastrointestinal tract.
Outside of work, Dr. Koutlas enjoys spending time with his wife and son. His hobbies include golf, fly fishing, and travel.
