About Joseph Wawrzynski, MD

Dr. Joe Wawrzynski is originally from Durham, North Carolina. He attended the University of Notre Dame for his undergraduate studies in biological sciences, and subsequently spent a year working for Notre Dame in Dublin, Ireland. He returned to the United States for his medical training, earning his MD from Brown University’s Alpert Medical School before coming home to North Carolina for his Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at Duke University. His interests within GI are broad and include the management of IBD (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), IBS, GERD, EoE, liver and pancreaticobiliary diseases, and colon cancer detection and prevention. He has contributed to multiple peer-reviewed publications in the GI literature.

In addition to his clinical interest in all aspects of gastroenterology and hepatology, he has a subspecialty interest in the management of obesity and its association with a wide variety of gastrointestinal diseases, including hepatic steatosis or “fatty liver disease”, acid reflux, and several cancers of the GI tract. He completed a specialized training program through Cornell and Columbia Universities and earned board certification in Obesity Medicine. He is also a graduate of Duke’s Clinical Nutrition Fellowship, an intensive program that allowed him to build upon his foundation in nutrition, a topic that is vital to the management of obesity and GI diseases. He is excited to be a part of Digestive Health Specialists and to provide the best possible care for his patients in the Triad.

In his free time, he enjoys spending quality time with his wife and two daughters, playing golf, traveling, and cheering for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the football field.
