Recently there has been information regarding a “CRE (carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae) Superbug” outbreak reportedly linked to a specific type of Endoscope called a Duodenoscope. The Duodoneoscope is used for ERCP procedures. These scopes have a specially designed mechanism at the tip of the scope to guide instruments during the ERCP procedure. The FDA has issued an alert about the difficulty cleaning the mechanism at the tip of the scope and is investigating the link between these scopes and the outbreak.
We want to assure our patients that none of the Digestive Health Specialist Outpatient Endoscopy Centers use these types of Duodenoscopes, nor do we perform these procedures in our Outpatient facilities. Digestive Health Specialists follows all manufacturer’s instructions, as well as the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) Guidelines, for cleaning and High Level Disinfection of all our scopes.
Patient safety is our number one priority at all of our Endoscopy Centers. If you have any questions regarding the cleaning or disinfection process, please call our office at 336-768-6211.
